Seventeen-year-old Ezradeene Holford is the first recipient of the Kevin Greenidge Scholarship for disadvantaged young people.
Ezradeene, a second-year environmental science student at the Barbados Community College, received her cash award and a certificate at a ceremony recently.
“I encourage you to continue to excel in your studies, and to dream. Remember you can achieve whatever you set your mind to do. Just work hard, stay focused, and set your goals,” Dr. Greenidge told the scholarship winner.
Each year the Kevin Greenidge Charity Trust will donate three scholarships to at-risk young people who are pursuing tertiary education in Barbados.
The recipients must be between the ages of 17 and 25 and must have been wards of one of the island’s children’s homes. Awardees must maintain at least a B+ average in their course of studies.
Each scholarship is valued at BDS$2,500 annually. The prize monies are to help the recipients with their school’s registration fees, the cost of books and transportation, and living expenses. In addition, awardees will benefit from at least two hours of personal mentorship monthly with Dr. Greenidge
The Trustees will work with the Child Care Board to identify the recipients of these scholarships.
Dr. Greenidge, a former ward of a children’s home, is offering these scholarships to at-risk and underprivileged students to help them realise their educational dreams and improve their standing in life. His efforts include helping the underprivileged and less fortunate young people in Barbados through mentorship, counselling, and removing barriers to education. He is also committed to giving back to his alma mater, the Alleyne School.
