About The Trust
Dr. Kevin Greenidge is best known as an economist. However, the eighth Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados also has a deep passion for philanthropy.
He rose above humble beginnings and challenging early years to excel academically and professionally, eventually becoming a Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund and a Senior Economic Advisor to the Government of Barbados.
Dr. Greenidge, who grew up in a children’s home, attributes his success to the local system of free education and has now made it his mission to help improve the lives of others, especially young people who are underprivileged or otherwise at-risk.
Mere months into his tenure as Governor, he launched the Kevin Greenidge Charitable Trust to support educational needs, offer counselling and mentorship, and develop positive lifestyles among youth.
Dr. Greenidge has committed to not just providing financial support to young people who don’t have the means to attain their tertiary educational goals, but guiding them on their careers and other matters.
In an effort to help young Barbadians achieve their dreams, the Trust offers three $2,500 general scholarships for tertiary-level students who were wards of children’s homes and one annual scholarship to a student of Dr. Greenidge’s alma mater, The Alleyne School. This $1,000 award is for excellence in Business Studies.
The charity’s trustees collaborate with the Child Care Board to identify the recipients of the general scholarships who receive funding to cover registration fees and other costs such as books and transportation.
As he presented the first Kevin Greenidge Prize for Outstanding Results in CXC Business Subjects to Trashonna McCollin, Dr. Greenidge highlighted the role of The Alleyne School in his development.
He said he felt a sense of pride in giving back to the institution where he learned that discipline, hard work, and vision are central to one’s success.
“It was at The Alleyne School that the successes of a colleague and friend in academics inspired me to apply myself, be diligent, and control my path. I treasure that lesson and I share it with you because it influenced who I am and fuelled the success I enjoy today,” he said,”.
With the Kevin Greenidge Charitable trust in its infancy, it’s sure to make a significant impact on the lives of the island’s young people.
